One of the “newest” ways to get rid of unwanted eyebrow hair is to use a technique called eyebrow threading.
I use the term newest with quotes because eyebrow threading has actually been used for centuries in the Middle and Far East as well as India where it is thought to have originated.
While it has been offered as a service in many US salons catering to women from India and the Middle East it is just now gaining popularity with American women as an effective alternative to tweezing and waxing.
What Is Eyebrow Threading?
The mouth method is the most popular because it is the most precise and fastest way to thread eyebrows.
One end of a cotton thread is placed in the technician’s mouth to keep the thread tight and the other end looped around individual eyebrow hairs that are then pulled out.
It is important to note that the end of the thread in the technician’s mouth NEVER touches you in any way.
An experienced technician can do this very quickly and precisely with very little pain.
The hand method consists of using a cotton thread that is doubled and twisted that is then rolled over areas where hair is to be removed.
The hairs get caught in the thread and are removed at the follicle level giving longer lasting results and unlike tweezing which only removes one hair at a time eyebrow threading can remove multiple hairs in one pass and you will feel a light pinching sensation during the process.
Figure about 5 to 10 minutes to thread eyebrows only. Upper lip threading will add 5 more minutes to your session and a full facial threading will take about 20 to 30 minutes.
Threaded Eyebrows Look Great!
The result of threading is a beautiful precise, clean hairline that usually lasts for three to four weeks before another threading appointment is needed.
When done by a trained technician threading can add shape to an eyebrow, help raise the arch of the brow and even eliminate an unsightly Unibrow.
Indian movie stars are famous for having beautiful eyebrows and it is because they have their eyebrows threaded regularly.
How Much Does Eyebrow Threading Cost?
Getting your eyebrows threaded is cheaper than other hair removal methods because no expensive chemicals, waxes or depilatory creams are needed but the cost of a threading depends on the salon you visit and where you live but many salons and mall kiosks charge around $10 for the service.
Does Eyebrow Threading Hurt?
Obviously everyone has a different pain threshold so this question can be difficult to answer. Most have found the pain to be low to moderate like these women:
I got my eyebrows threaded three days ago! they look amazing and it doesn’t hurt at all! Source: Wisegeek
Threading doesn’t hurt as bad as waxing. plus its really quick. a lot of salon do it now. Source: Yahoo Answers
Of course there are others that say getting their eyebrows threaded was very painful but after reading many of these comments as well as those by threading technicians I believe if you go to someone that is well-trained threading your eyebrows will be no more painful than eyebrow waxing.
Threading VS Waxing
With eyebrow waxing the top layers of your skin are peeled making threading gentler on the skin.
Unlike waxing, threading does not usually redden or irritate the skin.
Threading also allows for more precise control in shaping eyebrows as well since individual hairs are removed one at a time.
If you use Accutane or Retin-A you need to avoid waxing which can hurt your skin.
Since nothing more than a simple cotton thread is used threading eyebrows is cheaper than getting your eyebrows waxed.
Hair does not grow back as fast.
You can target individual hairs with threading while waxing removes multiple hairs.
Eyebrow Threading Tips
- A little redness after an eyebrow threading session is normal and should go away within a couple of hours and you can always use a cold pack to alleviate the redness.
- Avoid using an eyebrow razor as the hair is not completely removed and can make the hair that is left thicker. You also run the risk of getting an ingrown hair.
- Make sure you are being treated by someone who has plenty of experience in eyebrow threading.
- Wait at least two hours before putting on any makeup or cleansers.
- Some salons call threading “Fatlah” or “Khite” so look for those words if you don’t see anything related to threading eyebrows.

Eyebrow Threading FAQ
How do you prepare for a threading session?
All you need to do is make sure your hair is growing just above the skin but for a different eyebrow shape let your brows grow a bit longer and avoid tweezing them.
If I get my eyebrows threaded will the hairs grow back thicker and darker?
No because the hairs are being removed from the hair follicle. There is a good chance the hair will actually grow back finer as a result of threading.
How long does threading last?
A threading can last between 2 to 8 weeks depending on your hair type and which area of your body you had threaded.
I just had cosmetic surgery. Is it safe to get a threading?
If you have just had a medical procedure performed it is important that you check with your doctor before doing a threading session.
Can I get threaded if I have sensitive skin?
You can but you might get a little redness in the treated areas that usually disappears after 15 minutes or so. If you do get a rash that doesn’t go away make an appointment with your dermatologist as soon as possible.
What parts of my body can I have threaded?
Practically anywhere there is hair growing including eyebrows, upper lip, chin and even sideburns for the male customer.
